Enlighten 1.0

What is the Enlighten 1.0 Workshop?

The Enlighten Workshop is a two-day introductory lighting workshop designed to teach photographers the basics of flash and studio photography, including speedlights and studio strobes.

Where is it held?

Enlighten is held in Dallas, Texas.

What topics are covered?

  • Fundamentals of flash photography and studio lighting
  • Lighting styles – how to identify and create them
  • How to use strobes and speedlights (including Alien Bees)
  • White balancing in studio
  • Different light modifiers and why/how to use them
  • How to pose in a small space
  • Why and how to utilize 1 and 2+ light set ups
  • Setting up and tearing down backdrops, lights, stands, etc.
  • A full day of portfolio building

What experience level do I need in order to attend?

You do not need ANY previous flash or lighting experience in order to attend Enlighten. You only need to be proficient in shooting natural light using your camera’s manual mode. You MUST be comfortable shooting in manual mode in order to take this workshop, as we will NOT be covering this.

What if I have some lighting experience, will I still learn something new?

Although this workshop is designed to take a photographer from having never touched a flash or strobe to knowing the ins and outs of OCF and studio lighting, Enlighten is also valuable for those photographers who have dabbled in lighting and want to go deeper. We will cover all of the fundamentals of lighting, breaking down how it works and why. We’ll also get into the creative aspect, discussing which modifiers to use achieve the type of light you want in your images. Then, you’ll get a chance to work with those types of modifiers to get hands-on experience. Whether you’ve already invested in a lighting system or you’re unsure where to begin, Enlighten’s got you covered.

How many students are at each workshop?

I have limited the workshop to only 10 photographers per session in order to provide each attendee with a truly immersive learning experience. I firmly believe that the best way to learn and remember how to do something is through hands-on experience, and you can’t do that if there are tons of photographers fighting over limited gear and pushing to the front to photograph the models. You will get a chance to set up and tear down equipment, shoot with that equipment, and spend time photographing the models without interference from anyone else. This is not a workshop where students shoot over each other’s shoulders.

What is the cost of Enlighten 1.0?

The enrollment fee for Enlighten is $1500, and it is due in full at the time of registration. This includes attendance to the two-day workshop, as well as take-home materials designed to reinforce the knowledge you learn at the workshop. The workshop covers a TON of information, so I have designed a 100+ page comprehensive workbook and multiple tutorial videos that address all of the information you learn in the workshop so you can review all of the key concepts once you’re home and ready to implement studio lighting. As an added bonus, you will be added to the Enlighten Workshop Alumni Facebook Group for continuing education long after the workshop ends.

Are hotel, travel and meals included?

No, the cost of registration does not include hotel, travel fees, or meals. You will be responsible for these costs. However, once your registration is complete, I will send you information on airports, directions, hotels, and other details related to getting to and from the workshop.

Is the registration fee refundable?

No, the registration fee is NOT refundable. However, if you are unable to attend the workshop, you may sell/transfer your registration to another photographer. Please contact me directly to arrange this.

Do I have a mileage restriction?

No. At this time, there is no mileage restriction for this workshop.

What equipment do I need to bring?

I will be providing all of the studio lighting equipment. Therefore, you are only responsible for bringing your camera, lenses, memory cards, batteries, and a notebook & pen. If you currently own a speedlight and have questions about your specific speedlight that you would like answered, you are more than welcome to bring it so we can discuss it. However, this is NOT required.

Do I need to purchase lighting equipment before Enlighten 1.0?

No, you do not need to purchase any lighting equipment before Enlighten. In fact, I recommend that attendees wait to purchase any equipment until AFTER attending Enlighten. During the workshop, you will get the chance to work with multiple lights, light modifiers, light stands, and other studio and lighting equipment. As a result, you will figure out which pieces fit your personal shooting style, giving you a better idea of what you DO want to invest your money into once you’re home.
